22 Jun
Summary
- An unmade film, Paani, eerily mirrors current water crises.
- Recent water shortages in Mumbai and Rajasthan were predicted.
- Creative differences derailed Paani's production with YRF.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur's ambitious yet unmade film, Paani, starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput, has gained renewed attention as its dystopian vision of water scarcity now mirrors real-world crises. Recent reports detailing severe water shortages in Mumbai and protests in Rajasthan demanding clean water resonate with Kapur's script.
The film Paani was conceptualized to depict a future where water is a scarce commodity, leading to societal divisions and global conflict. Kapur intended to set the film in India, believing it would be a groundbreaking Indian film with international appeal.
Despite nearly 13 years of development and securing a production deal with Yash Raj Films (YRF), Paani never materialized. Kapur cited creative differences with YRF, particularly regarding the casting of Sushant Singh Rajput, as the reason for the project's collapse.
Kapur lamented that the film might have been completed had Sushant Singh Rajput still been alive. He recalled Rajput's intense dedication to the role, describing him as an 'obsessive actor' whose passion was crucial for the film's envisioned depth.
