An 11-year-old Indian classical dancer, Thaaragai Aarathana, recently performed Bharatnatyam 20 feet underwater to draw attention to the critical issue of plastic pollution. Inspired by witnessing marine creatures struggling with plastic waste, including turtles trapped in nets, Aarathana combined her skills as a dancer and trained diver for this impactful act. Her mission extends beyond performance; she has actively participated in cleaning the oceans.
Reports indicate that Aarathana has been instrumental in removing nearly 3,000 kg of plastic waste from the sea. Her father, also a dedicated marine conservationist, has removed approximately 37,000 kg of waste over two decades, showcasing a family commitment to ocean health.
The viral video of her underwater dance has garnered widespread praise, highlighting how art can become a powerful tool for activism. Her actions serve as a poignant reminder, especially as global efforts to combat pollution continue.
