Summary
- Nearly 20 sensors continuously monitor River Test water quality.
- Scheme covers the River Test from source to mouth.
- Southern Water invests £84 million in river improvements.

The River Test now boasts the UK's first comprehensive real-time pollution monitoring system along its entire length, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative. Nearly 20 advanced sensors, known as sondes, have been installed to continuously measure crucial water quality indicators like dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and temperature.
This pioneering effort by Southern Water, local communities, and environmental campaigners follows significant public concern over pollution incidents, including overflows during heavy rain in 2024. The real-time data, accessible to river keepers and soon the public, is expected to provide a clearer understanding of pollution types and their entry points into the river.
Southern Water is committing £84 million to enhance water quality along the River Test, with £28 million specifically allocated to the Fullerton Waste Water Treatment Works. This investment and the new monitoring scheme are designed to address not only the company's discharges but also other factors affecting water quality, such as agricultural runoff and illegal connections, preparing for future legislation.
