From deluges to -2C: Britain's weather whiplash
28 Oct
Summary
- Sub-zero daytime temperatures forecast for over 24 UK areas.
- Two fatalities reported following accidents related to recent storms.
- Flood alerts remain a concern for parts of England's east coast.

Following recent severe weather from Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, which caused significant rainfall and two fatalities, the United Kingdom is bracing for a sharp decline in temperatures. Forecasters predict that daytime temperatures will plummet below freezing in numerous locations nationwide, with some areas in the Midlands potentially reaching as low as -2C.
These cold conditions are expected to affect many parts of the country, including Scotland, where temperatures are forecast to reach -2C around Inverness. Even larger cities like Manchester and areas in Yorkshire may see temperatures between 1C and 2C. Flood alerts associated with the earlier storms remain a concern, particularly for eastern coastal regions of England.
The Met Office's outlook for early November suggests building high pressure, leading to drier weather with variable cloud cover. Overnight and morning fog is anticipated in some areas, potentially causing lingering chilliness. While most regions are expected to experience temperatures close to average for the season, winds could be stronger in the north.
