21 Dec
Summary
- Bloodsucking flies are causing distress in a UK village during winter.

- Residents report the fly issue worsened after a calf-rearing business opened nearby.

Residents of Firsby, Lancashire, are battling a relentless swarm of bloodsucking stable flies that have persisted into the winter months. This unusual winter infestation has made daily life unbearable, with locals unable to open windows and vehicles becoming covered in fly excrement. The situation reportedly escalated after a calf-rearing business commenced operations nearby several years ago.
Zena Thomas, who has lived in the village for over 30 years, described the flies as a persistent nightmare, stating that thousands of them make it impossible to use their homes normally. Her pets have suffered greatly, with one dog, Cat, requiring treatment and potential ear tip amputation. Other residents, like Sean Roachford, highlight that the problem worsens annually as the business expands, impacting their ability to enjoy outdoor spaces and visit with grandchildren.
The stable flies are known for their painful bites and potential to spread infection due to their association with rotting manure. The environmental agency has stated the issue is outside its remit, directing it to the local authority, East Lindsey District Council, for further action. The persistent fly problem has significantly disrupted the community's quality of life throughout much of the year.
