Heatwave to Halt Britain's Trains: Travel Only If Essential!
22 Jun
Summary
- Temperatures up to 40C expected in southern England and Wales.
- Network Rail to impose speed restrictions, causing delays/cancellations.
- Passengers urged to travel only if essential due to extreme heat.

Temperatures are expected to soar to 37C across much of southern England and Wales over the next three days, with the potential to reach 40C in localized areas. This extreme heat has prompted Network Rail to anticipate imposing speed restrictions on train services, a measure previously taken in 2022 when record temperatures caused similar disruptions.
These speed restrictions are necessary as extreme heat can cause steel rails to expand and buckle, and can affect overhead wires and signaling systems. Consequently, many train services are expected to be significantly delayed or entirely cancelled. Passengers are being urged to check their travel plans and only journey if absolutely essential, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday when a red extreme heat warning is in effect.
Commuter network Chiltern Railways, operating between London and Birmingham, has already cancelled over half of its scheduled services in preparation. Other lines, including those affected by a recent fatal collision at Bedford, may also experience limitations. Passengers are advised to check service updates on the morning of travel and to carry water if they must journey.
