Development at Graven Hill, the UK's largest self-build community, has achieved a significant ecological success by protecting bat roosting sites. Initial surveys in 2015 revealed bat roosts in abandoned buildings and woodlands, prompting a comprehensive plan to safeguard the legally protected species alongside construction.
To mitigate the impact of demolition and development, new roosting sites were mandated. In 2021, the Graven Hill Village Development Company installed 45 specialized bat boxes, strategically placed to offer safe havens while minimizing disturbance to residents. These efforts have demonstrably paid off.
Last year saw eight active roosts, increasing to eleven in 2025, with projections for continued population growth. This success highlights how development can integrate with and benefit local wildlife, showcasing thoughtful planning and ecological expertise.
