Clear skies allowed much of the UK to witness this year's Wolf supermoon, the first full moon of the year. While visibility was excellent, observers contended with cold temperatures, with many areas experiencing sub-zero conditions.
The Wolf Moon earns its name from historical observations of wolves prowling for food during the long, midwinter nights. Its appearance this year was particularly striking as it coincided with a supermoon phase, meaning it was closer to Earth, thus appearing up to 14% larger and 30% brighter.
Spectacular images emerged, showing the moon setting behind the ancient monument of Stonehenge in Wiltshire. It was also captured looming above Glasgow in Scotland and over the Thames Estuary in Minster, Kent. The moon reached its fullest point around 10 am on Saturday, coinciding with frigid temperatures across the nation.
