Rat Sightings Surge Amidst UK's Hottest Summers
20 Oct
Summary
- Rat sightings increased 15% year-on-year during the UK's hottest summer.
- Manchester saw a 26% rise in rodent control requests.
- Rodenticide resistance is a growing challenge for pest control.

Hot, dry summers are influencing rat behaviour in the UK, leading them to seek water sources closer to human dwellings. Pest control firm Rentokil reported a 15% increase in rat sightings between June and August, coinciding with the UK's hottest summer on record. Five major UK cities observed double-digit growth in rodent-related calls, with Manchester showing the largest increase at 26%. Other cities like Oxford and Leeds & Bradford also reported significant rises. Experts attribute this trend partly to dense urban environments offering rats abundant resources and shelter.
Rats require essential resources such as food, water, warmth, and shelter to survive and can access properties through compromised infrastructure. The head of Rentokil's Technical Academy, Paul Blackhurst, emphasized that rat infestations can occur in any property, regardless of cleanliness, and urged early action. He also highlighted the growing concern of "rodenticide resistance," where rat populations develop immunity to common treatments, making pest control more complex. In response, Rentokil has launched an innovative rodenticide-free solution using air-driven technology.
