Heatwave Overwhelms Animal Rescues: Hedgehogs & Foxes Struggle
28 Jul
Summary
- Wildlife centers are overwhelmed with animals suffering heatstroke.
- Elderly individuals are at high risk due to body temperature regulation issues.
- Blood supplies have dropped to dangerously low levels due to heatwaves.

Animal rescue centers across the UK are reporting being "fit to bursting" with wildlife, particularly hedgehogs and foxes, suffering from heatstroke amid record-breaking summer temperatures. The RSPCA has noted a significant increase in admissions, with some baby hedgehogs found in distress and requiring intensive care. Wildlife centers are operating at maximum capacity as animals seek food and water during the day, leading to heat-related illnesses.
The extreme heat is also posing a severe risk to vulnerable human populations, especially the elderly, who have greater difficulty regulating body temperature. Heat-health alerts have been issued for several regions, advising caution. Over 60% of heat-related deaths in a recent heatwave were among those over 85 years old, highlighting the danger of UK homes retaining heat.
Furthermore, the prolonged heatwaves have led to a critical drop in blood and platelet supplies, with the NHS appealing for urgent donations. Blood stocks are currently at half their target levels. Vehicle maintenance is also crucial, as high temperatures put extra strain on tires, batteries, and cooling systems, prompting advice from the AA to check vehicles and carry water.
