28 Jan
Summary
- £18m funding targets high-risk coastal areas for climate adaptation.
- Selective property purchases and financing solutions are prioritized.
- Pilot schemes require a 10% local funding contribution from participants.

The UK government has launched a significant initiative, awarding £18 million in funding to bolster the resilience of coastal areas against the escalating threats of climate change. This crucial investment is specifically earmarked for communities in Norfolk, Suffolk, and East Riding, regions experiencing severe shoreline erosion.
The Environment Agency's Coastal Adaptation Pilots will utilize this funding for strategic property acquisitions and innovative financing mechanisms in areas facing imminent risks. The goal is to establish sustainable approaches for managing coastal transitions, providing a model for other at-risk locales.
Participating communities are required to provide a 10% local funding contribution, fostering shared responsibility. This initiative builds upon the previous £36 million Coastal Transition Accelerator Programme. A further £12 million is also available for smaller-scale actions nationwide, such as early warning systems and improved coastal access, aiming to enhance preparedness for future challenges.
