Analysis shows that 83% of cities are already highly vulnerable to urban heat, with this number set to rise to 100% by 2040. Projections indicate that by 2100, 63% of British cities could reach severe heat vulnerability.
The primary cause is the urban heat island effect, where city structures like buildings and roads absorb and retain heat. This is compounded by a lack of natural cooling elements such as trees, parks, and water bodies. Human activities, including air conditioning, further contribute to the heat buildup.
While some cities are better equipped for rising temperatures, cities like Leicester, Exeter, and Nottingham are projected to warm significantly. Currently, Portsmouth leads in heat vulnerability, with London also featuring in the top rankings. Conversely, Milton Keynes and Durham are among those best protected.
Rising temperatures pose serious risks to public health, comfort, and infrastructure. Heat-associated excess deaths are already a concern. Experts suggest solutions like increasing green spaces, retrofitting buildings with passive cooling, and designing new constructions with heat resilience in mind are crucial.
