Heatwave forces owl centre to cancel shows

Baytree Owl and Raptor Centre, a long-standing facility near Spalding, has been forced to scrap its flying displays and experience days because of dangerously high temperatures. The center's manager described the flying arena as a 'heat trap,' with mercury levels reaching over 35C on Tuesday as the UK grapples with its third heatwave of the year. These cancellations are a direct response to the welfare concerns for the over 60 birds housed at the center, some of which, like snowy owls, struggle to regulate their body temperature due to thick coats.

The extreme heat has already had a significant financial impact, with a 20% decrease in visitor numbers reported. This has led to a challenging week for the center, described as a 'write-off' by management. Staff are actively working to mitigate the effects of the heat by creating ice blocks, increasing shade, and moving birds from sunny areas. They are also seeking additional funding to cover the shortfall in takings and are exploring adaptations for both the outdoor arena and the indoor flying area, which currently feels like a 'greenhouse'.

Management acknowledges that climate change may lead to similar situations in the future, emphasizing the need for the center to adapt its operations. The safety and welfare of the birds remain the utmost priority, and plans are underway to ensure they can continue flying activities safely despite the environmental challenges.
