Penguin Colonies Merge: UK Aquariums End Breeding
29 May
Summary
- Gentoo penguins will merge from London and Birmingham facilities.
- Breeding of gentoo penguins will permanently cease.
- A new, enhanced habitat with natural light is planned.
Merlin Entertainments, operator of the Sea Life London Aquarium, has committed to ceasing the breeding of gentoo penguins and merging its UK colonies. The 14 penguins currently housed in London will join the 17 from its Birmingham facility. This combined group will reside in a newly enhanced habitat, promising more water space and natural light.
This significant move comes after extensive campaigns by wildlife activists who criticized the penguins' indoor enclosure lacking natural daylight. Merlin's decision to permanently end gentoo breeding marks a victory for organizations like Freedom for Animals and the Born Free Foundation. Detailed proposals for the improved habitat, expected to be at the London Aquarium, are due by September.
