Nilgai Capture: Ujjain Tackles Crop Pests with South African Boma
31 Oct
Summary
- Nilgai capture operation in Ujjain uses South African boma technique.
- Operation rescheduled for Sunday due to pilot's mandatory rest day.
- Captured nilgai will be relocated to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The second phase of an operation to capture nilgai using the South African boma technique commenced on Saturday, October 30, 2026, in Ujjain, but was postponed due to the helicopter pilot observing a mandatory no-flight day. Forest department officials and a South African team are scheduled to resume the exercise on Sunday morning, October 31, 2026.
The operation is slated to run from October 31 to November 3, 2026, in the Ujjain district. Captured nilgai will be transported to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary located in Mandsaur. This initiative addresses crop damage faced by farmers and frequent highway accidents caused by nilgai.
A boma, a specialized enclosure, has been established at a predetermined location in Brajraj Khedi. Power supply around the site will be suspended during the capture activities. A health department team with an ambulance will be present, and captured animals will undergo veterinary examination.
In a previous phase in Shajapur district, over 1,500 blackbuck were rescued. However, only 94 nilgai were captured, prompting the current Ujjain phase to focus exclusively on nilgai due to their more complex rescue requirements.
