Udupi Mandates Special Waste Collection Centers
24 May
Summary
- Special care waste centers required every five square kilometers.
- Disciplinary action for flouting solid waste management rules.
- RRR units to be set up for donating used items.

In Udupi, local bodies are now mandated to establish collection centers for special care waste, ensuring at least one center per five square kilometers. This directive aims to manage items such as paint cans, bulbs, and medicines effectively. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that disciplinary action will be taken against individuals and institutions failing to comply with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2026.
Furthermore, the administration plans to identify and register large waste generators, promoting on-site processing of their waste. For those without such facilities, local bodies will collect segregated waste and a prescribed fee. Roads will be cleaned regularly, and "black spots" for waste accumulation will be cleared and prevented from recurring, with penalties for littering and potential CCTV surveillance.
Udupi will also see the implementation of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR) units, enabling citizens to donate used items. Dry waste will be sorted into recyclable, non-recyclable, combustible, and hazardous categories at material recovery facilities. Special systems will be introduced for managing solid waste at tourist spots and beaches, with specific arrangements for plastic bottle collection.
