Typhoon Saudel, the year's 18th typhoon, has reintensified and is now bringing storms and gale-force winds to the southern and eastern coastal regions. As of Tuesday morning, the storm's center was located in the northwestern South China Sea, approximately 480 kilometers southwest of Shanwei, Guangdong. Maximum sustained winds near the center reached Force 8, with a minimum central air pressure of 995 hectopascals.
Forecasters predict Saudel will move east-northeastward at about 25 kilometers per hour with little change in intensity. Much of the South China Sea is expected to experience winds of Force 6-7, with gusts up to Force 8 on Tuesday and Wednesday. To mitigate potential casualties, Guangdong authorities mandated the evacuation of all fishing vessels and workers on offshore engineering facilities by Monday evening.
