2 Oct
Summary
- Rescued tusker Shourya died from severe internal injuries and infection.
- Shourya sustained injuries attempting to escape a wooden enclosure.
- An inquiry has been ordered into healthcare protocols at elephant camps.
A 35-year-old rescued tusker, Shourya, died on Thursday morning at the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp near Shivamogga. The elephant succumbed to severe internal injuries, deep tissue necrosis, and systemic exhaustion following a months-long struggle with an infected leg injury. This death follows another elephant fatality at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu.
Shourya was captured on February 22 from the Balehonnur region after human-elephant conflict incidents. At Sakrebailu, the tusker reportedly rammed itself against its enclosure, sustaining extensive injuries. Despite medical intervention from multiple veterinary teams and wildlife organizations, Shourya's condition worsened, with diagnostic evaluations revealing severe tissue necrosis and pus accumulation.
Forest officials stated the elephant collapsed late Wednesday and died Thursday morning despite supportive treatment. Wildlife activists are calling for the suspension of negligent officers and a high-level inquiry into the management and medical practices at both camps. Preliminary findings suggest toxaemia and septic shock caused by a bacterial infection were the causes of death. A formal postmortem is underway, and an inquiry report is expected within a week.
