Tripura Surges Past 7MW Solar Power Milestone

Tripura has crossed a significant 7-megawatt milestone in solar electricity generation, largely driven by the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY). This achievement signifies a major step towards the state's energy self-reliance and sustainable development.

The PMSGMBY scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, empowers households to become small power generation units. By installing rooftop solar panels, consumers can drastically cut electricity bills and earn additional income by selling excess power back to the government grid.

To date, 17,601 consumers have registered, with 2,061 installations completed and 1,746 beneficiaries receiving subsidies of up to Rs 85,800. The state electricity corporation has set an ambitious target to boost its solar power generation capacity to 50 MW within the next year, potentially transforming the power sector.

This transition to solar power offers a practical route to financial independence as electricity costs rise. Furthermore, solar systems are being installed in 2,000 government buildings, projected to generate around 80 MW upon completion next year.
