Trichy Corporation initiated a significant environmental enhancement project by planting 200 rosy trumpet trees around the historic Teppakulam tank, adjacent to the Rockfort temple complex. These ornamental trees, expected to bloom with pink flowers, are planted along the tank bunds and footpaths. The civic body has also developed a comprehensive detailed project report (DPR) to redevelop and beautify the tank, a project estimated to cost approximately Rs 25 crore.
The beautification plans include features such as underground utility infrastructure, stepped ghats for public seating, and improved footpaths on all sides to prevent pollution. The corporation aims to secure funding from the state government and the HR&CE department for this initiative. Furthermore, the tank desilting has been successfully completed through a corporate social responsibility drive, with plans to divert water from the Cauvery and Kollidam rivers into Teppakulam once river levels are favorable. Tenders for the redevelopment are expected to be floated within the next month.
