Trichy's Pirattiyur tank is undergoing a significant transformation through a ₹70 lakh biodiversity restoration project. This initiative focuses on revitalizing the second largest water body in the city, which was previously neglected and prone to encroachments. The project includes the creation of bird islands designed to attract migratory water birds and the strengthening of the tank's bunds.
Supported by eight institutions and NGOs, including Bishop Heber College, the project leverages heavy machinery and community crowdfunding. Plans also include a walking track with viewing decks, a uniform tank depth of 1.6 meters, rainwater harvesting systems, a herbal garden, and palm saplings along the bunds. Students are actively involved through crowdfunding for planting native trees.
The project aims to develop Pirattiyur tank as a model for biodiversity improvement and environmental conservation. Educational sessions will be conducted for students to raise awareness. The completion of this work is scheduled before the onset of the northeast monsoon, ensuring the tank is ready for the season.
