Summary
- Trichy Corporation allocates 362 crore for a climate budget, a city-first initiative.
- Planned actions include floating wetland islands, air quality monitors, and trash barriers.
- A deficit budget of 106.7 crore was presented for 2026-27, with funds awaited.

The Trichy Corporation has introduced a groundbreaking 'climate budget,' earmarking 362 crore for climate resilience and impact mitigation, despite presenting a deficit budget of 106.7 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This unique initiative focuses on reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change. Planned under the 'climate action plan' are floating wetland islands in 10 tanks at a cost of ₹94 lakh to improve water quality, and trash barriers to prevent pollution in water bodies. Additional measures include floating aerators (₹4.2 crore) and expanding EV charging infrastructure (₹50 lakh).
The corporation is also investing in energy audits for its buildings, allocating 22 lakh to promote renewable energy. A significant portion of the budget, 15 crore, is dedicated to developing urban forests using the Miyawaki method across 10 locations. This green push complements efforts to strengthen the city's identity through beautification and educational initiatives, including VR labs in 10 corporation schools.
Despite the green initiatives, the 2026-27 budget projects an expenditure of 1,355.1 crore against an estimated revenue of 1,248.3 crore, resulting in a deficit for the second consecutive year. Mayor Anbalagan expressed confidence that pending subsidies and finance commission funds, amounting to approximately 192 crore, would address this deficit. Meanwhile, AIADMK councillors staged a walkout, citing unfulfilled promises and neglect of their wards, a claim the Mayor refuted by stating significant funds were spent in those areas.
