19 Jul
Summary
- Native fruit-bearing saplings were planted at a sports complex.
- The drive aligns with the traditional Tamil farming practice for Aadi.
- Students learned about El Niño's potential climate impact.

To commence the Tamil month of Aadi, students at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) sports complex in Trichy actively engaged in a tree plantation drive on Sunday. This event was part of the 'Aadi Pattam Thedi Vidhai' initiative, aimed at leveraging traditional farming wisdom for optimal planting.
The initial phase saw the successful planting of 20 native fruit-bearing saplings throughout the district sports complex. Organizers from eNGO Shine Treechy plan to extend these efforts in the coming weeks, targeting additional areas within the complex and other public spaces in the city that currently have limited green cover.
The Aadi month, spanning July and August, is traditionally recognized in Tamil farming practices as an ideal period for sowing and planting, anticipating the arrival of the northeast monsoon. This timing is believed to significantly enhance the survival rate of new saplings.
Furthermore, young girls training in Mallakhamb at the sports complex were educated about the potential consequences of the 2026 El Niño event. Discussions covered its projected impact on monsoon patterns and ocean surface temperatures, raising awareness about climate change among the participants.
