- Solid waste management strengthened with new block-level plans.
- Reclaimed sites are being beautified with native tree saplings.
The Trichy district administration, in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), has achieved a significant milestone by reclaiming 594 garbage hotspots across 254 village panchayats. This intensive campaign aimed to streamline solid waste management in rural areas.
The special drive, which commenced on September 19, utilized 366 sanitation workers and 114 waste collection vehicles weekly. In four completed drives, 44 tonnes of solid waste were removed from previously identified hotspots.
Officials are developing block-level plans for all 14 blocks to ensure timely waste collection and prevent the recurrence of these hotspots. The reclaimed sites, often vacant village entry points, are now being planted with native tree saplings to enhance their appearance and encourage resident behavioral change.
Further measures under consideration include strengthening doorstep waste collection, public awareness campaigns, and dedicated plastic waste management and biodegradable waste recycling. Three more drives are scheduled until October 31 to eliminate all remaining identified garbage hotspots.
