Trichy corporation has initiated a significant tree plantation drive, successfully planting 5,000 native saplings in Akilandeswari Nagar using the Miyawaki method. This effort is a crucial step towards mitigating urban heat stress in 36 city wards.
The drive, covering 2,023 square meters, introduced over 20 native tree species, including shade-giving and fruit-bearing varieties. Sponsored through corporate social responsibility efforts, the saplings have dedicated maintenance and water sources, with appointed workers ensuring their upkeep.
This plantation milestone means Trichy has met 50% of its overall goal of planting 3 lakh saplings by December 2026. The intensified planting, coinciding with the northeast monsoon, is part of a strategy to address heat stress identified in a study by TNGCC and ICLEI South Asia.
The corporation now boasts eight Miyawaki urban forests across its five zones. The Miyawaki technique promotes dense green cover, aiding the city in achieving its tree-planting targets effectively and making suitable locations in residential areas a priority.
