Trichy Elephants Cool Down in Summer Heat
4 Jun
Summary
- New rain guns installed at ERRC for elephant comfort.
- Hydrotherapy pool aids rehabilitation and cooling.
- Elephants receive high-water-content fruits daily.

As Trichy endures intense summer heat, the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (ERRC) in MR Palayam is actively refreshing its elephants. The Tamil Nadu forest department has introduced new rain guns this year to enhance cooling.
These new additions work alongside mist foggers, overhead showers, mud baths, and swimming pools. A hydrotherapy pool, established last year, offers therapeutic water-based exercises.
Dedicated staff members, including veterinarians and mahouts, oversee the elephants' care. The centre currently houses five elephants, including elderly residents and those rescued from abusive situations.
In addition to their regular diet, the elephants receive abundant high-water-content fruits like watermelon and muskmelon. This initiative ensures they stay hydrated and comfortable during the peak summer months.
