Trichy Tackles Waste: New Rules Spark Councillor Training
22 Jun
Summary
- Councillors trained on updated solid waste management rules for 2026.
- Ward committees will be formed with residents and officials.
- New rules mandate stricter waste segregation for residents and businesses.

Trichy corporation has initiated a program to sensitize councillors on the new Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, aiming to elevate the city's waste management standards. This initiative comes as the quality of source segregation has seen a notable decline.
Updated regulations require residents and commercial entities to meticulously segregate waste into categories: biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary, and special care waste. This stricter approach supersedes the 2016 rules.
To ensure effective implementation, ward-level committees are being established. These committees, comprising councillors, residents' welfare associations, and sanitary officials, will convene monthly to assess sanitation conditions and pinpoint areas prone to littering. They will also identify bulk waste generators within their wards and explore avenues for independent waste recycling.
The training also covered the characteristics of different waste types and available recycling or disposal solutions, equipping councillors with the knowledge to guide their wards toward better waste management practices.
