Tragic Swan Death Sparks Calls for Stricter Dog Leash Laws

Experts say that many dog owners are unaware of the existing legislation that prohibits dogs from chasing, harassing, or injuring water birds. "Various legislations and acts actually do say you should keep your dogs on a lead in areas where there are waterfowl," explained Mr. Rogers, a wildlife expert. "You can be prosecuted if you're seen chasing, harassing, scaring, injuring or killing birds, or any wildlife in this country."

"Swans are very dangerous animals, they're very big, they're very powerful, they can weigh up to 15kg," said Mr. Rogers. "If your dog can't touch the bottom of the water they're in, there's a high chance they could drown."
