Coastal Wisdom Powers Climate Fight
10 Aug
Summary
- Traditional ecological knowledge can bolster climate adaptation and marine conservation.
- Indigenous coastal communities possess generational knowledge of marine ecosystems.
- Urbanization and pollution threaten Karachi's coastal settlements and fisheries.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has emphasized the critical role of traditional ecological knowledge held by local coastal communities. He stated that this wisdom is instrumental in strengthening climate adaptation strategies and enhancing marine conservation efforts.
The minister highlighted that these communities have accumulated generations of knowledge regarding tides, fishing grounds, marine species, and weather patterns. This traditional understanding is presented not just as a historical legacy but as a vital, living resource for building climate resilience and ensuring sustainable fisheries practices.
Coastal communities from Karachi and the Indus Delta to Gwadar and Jiwani depend heavily on marine resources. However, they face significant challenges. Fishing communities in Karachi's coastal areas are increasingly impacted by urbanization and pollution, while those in the Indus Delta contend with freshwater scarcity and environmental degradation affecting their livelihoods.
