Germany Warns Against Toxic Algae in Lakes

Summer weather conditions have created an ideal environment for cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, leading to significant blooms in the Baltic Sea and lakes across Germany's northern coastline. Health authorities have issued warnings to the public, advising against swimming in areas with visible algal concentrations.

Satellite imagery confirms extensive algae mats off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, extending towards the Danish border. These cyanobacteria can produce toxins that trigger allergic reactions. Exposure may result in skin and mucous membrane irritation, while ingestion of contaminated water can cause nausea and vomiting. Consequently, swimming bans have been implemented in several lakes within Schleswig-Holstein, remaining in effect until Wednesday.

The state government recommends avoiding swimming and bathing if water visibility is significantly reduced, advising that even children should avoid playing in shallow water under such conditions. Algal blooms are dynamic, influenced by wind and weather, and can appear rapidly.
