Toxic Air Pollution Triggers Nationwide Health Warnings Across the US

On November 15, 2025, Americans across the country have been warned to stay inside due to surging levels of air pollution with toxic particles that have been linked to serious health issues, including cancer, dementia, and stroke.
The warnings were issued by AirNow after analyzing data from hundreds of air monitoring stations nationwide. The data showed elevated levels of Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5), fine particles released by vehicles, industry, or burning wood, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause irritation, leading to coughing and trouble breathing.
In parts of Georgia, sensitive groups such as those with asthma or heart disease are currently being advised to remain indoors due to the high pollution levels. The situation is similar in other states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, and South Carolina, where even healthy individuals have been advised to stay inside.
The worst air quality over the last 24 hours was recorded in Bakersfield, California, an industrial hub just north of Los Angeles, which had an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 151 to 200 for eight hours, considered "hazardous" and dangerous for everyone to breathe. Davenport, Illinois, also experienced "hazardous" air quality during this period.
Experts warn that an AQI above 150 can cause negative health effects even in healthy people, while those with underlying conditions are at an even greater risk of experiencing severe symptoms, such as asthma attacks or exacerbated lung conditions. The pollution can also enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammation that raises the risk of stroke or heart attack.
