Summary
- Shoebill bird has one of the longest bills of any living bird
- Shoebills are often compared to dinosaurs due to their distinctive appearance
- Shoebill population in Africa is considered "vulnerable" due to hunting and habitat decline

A recent viral video has captivated viewers with the sight of a towering, dinosaur-like shoebill bird landing on a boat in Africa's Mabamba Swamp. While the video may make the bird appear even larger than it is, shoebills are indeed an impressive species, with one of the longest bills of any living bird.
Reaching up to 5 feet in height, shoebills are often compared to prehistoric creatures due to their distinctive appearance. Canadian paleontologist François Therrien explains that birds, including the shoebill, are actually the surviving lineage of small meat-eating dinosaurs that learned to fly. The shoebill's large, hooked bill and bony helmet-like features on its head further contribute to its dinosaur-like look.
