Water Woes: Villagers Protest Dry Taps
16 Sep
Summary
- Villagers protested for weeks without drinking water supply.
- Residents traveled 5-10 km daily to fetch water from other towns.
- Defunct motor pump sets caused the prolonged water shortage.

Residents of Keel Pudupakkam village, near Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai, staged a protest on Tuesday due to an ongoing lack of drinking water supply for several weeks. Approximately 2,500 families were affected by the severe water shortage, exacerbated by soaring temperatures.
Compelled by the irregular supply, villagers had to journey 5-10 km to procure water from neighboring towns. Local officials intervened, assuring residents that water supply would be resumed promptly. The panchayat requires over 1.25 lakh liters of water daily, sourced from borewells in the Cheyyar river.
The root cause of the disruption is identified as defunct motor pump sets responsible for drawing water to the village's four Overhead Tanks. While repairs are pending, private tanker lorries are being utilized to supply water to the affected tail-end areas.
