Summary
- Over 25,000 students trained to segregate waste at source.
- Students educate families and neighbors on waste management.
- City Corporation monitors garbage points and fines plastic violators.

Tiruppur City Corporation has mobilized over 25,000 students to enhance household waste segregation awareness across the city. Designated as 'cleanliness ambassadors,' these students receive training from the Health Department on Standard Operating Procedures for separating wet, dry, and hazardous waste.
Their mandate includes educating their families and neighbors about proper waste management practices and the dangers of plastic pollution. They are also encouraged to promote the use of cloth bags for shopping and packaging. This initiative is part of the 'People's Movement for Clean City.'
Simultaneously, the corporation is addressing littering by monitoring Garbage Vulnerable Points, implementing beautification measures, and planting trees. In a recent crackdown, commercial units using banned single-use plastics were fined ₹4.8 lakh, with approximately 2.5 tonnes of materials confiscated and repurposed for cement industries.
The city is also preparing to establish a permanent 25-acre dumping site in Nerupperichal for roadside garbage, moving away from previous reliance on abandoned quarry sites, which had prompted local demands for health impact surveys.
