Tirunelveli Mandates Garbage Segregation at Source
10 Sep
Summary
- Corporation enforces strict garbage segregation at source due to manpower shortage.
- Residents must separate waste into degradable, non-degradable, and hazardous categories.
- Fines issued for improper waste disposal and use of banned plastic bags.
The Tirunelveli Corporation has intensified its enforcement of garbage segregation at the source, a critical step to manage waste collection amidst a severe manpower deficit. With only 290 permanent sanitary workers, the corporation relies on 753 workers from self-help groups and 530 from a private agency to handle 150-170 tonnes of daily waste.
Residents are now mandated to meticulously separate their household waste into degradable, non-degradable, and hazardous categories before collection. Commercial establishments, especially larger ones, are also instructed to hand over discarded packaging materials separately to prevent contamination of general waste.
This new directive aims to simplify the collection process and improve solid waste management overall. Corporation officials have stated that waste will be refused if not properly separated at the point of origin. Recent enforcement actions include a ₹10,000 fine for two establishments dumping waste in storm drains and another firm being charged ₹2.14 lakh for collection fees and fines, which was paid immediately.
In a separate operation, banned plastic bags were seized from shops along T.M. Road, resulting in fines of ₹5,000 each for two violators. These measures underscore the Corporation's commitment to cleaner waste management practices.
