Tiruchi's Stray Dog Shelters Ready by October
5 Jul
Summary
- Four new shelters for sterilised stray dogs in Tiruchi will be ready by October.
- Each shelter costs ₹30 lakh and will house up to 100 dogs with veterinary facilities.
- NGOs will manage shelters, aiming to comply with Supreme Court directives.

Construction of dedicated shelters for sterilised stray dogs in Tiruchi is progressing steadily, with the Tiruchi Corporation anticipating their completion and commissioning by October 2026. Four such facilities are being established near existing Animal Birth Control centres and the Ariyamangalam dump yard, each at a cost of ₹30 lakh, totaling ₹1.20 crore. These shelters are designed in consultation with the Animal Welfare Board and will each accommodate around 100 stray dogs.
Each shelter will feature kennels, feeding areas, a kitchen, and essential veterinary infrastructure for first aid, vaccinations, and post-operative care. Non-governmental organisations will manage the day-to-day operations, appointing caretakers and a veterinarian for each facility. This initiative aligns with a Supreme Court directive to manage stray dogs in public spaces. Dedicated dog-catching teams will also be deployed for rescue and transport.
Currently, Tiruchi has an estimated stray dog population of 43,767. Of these, 32,323 dogs have already been sterilised and vaccinated against rabies. The Corporation aims to complete the sterilisation and vaccination of the remaining 11,444 stray dogs within this year. A booster vaccination drive for approximately 10,000 dogs is also underway.
