Tiruchi Launches E-Waste Drive Amidst Low Compliance
9 Oct
Summary
- Tiruchi Corporation aims to boost e-waste segregation through a new awareness campaign.
- A pilot initiative saw poor public response, highlighting low compliance with waste separation.
- 3.5 tonnes of e-waste have been collected by a private agency for processing.

Tiruchi Corporation is initiating a new awareness campaign to encourage residents and commercial establishments to segregate electronic waste. This effort follows a disappointing response to a pilot program launched towards the end of August. The campaign seeks to prevent hazardous discarded electronics from ending up in public areas.
Residents can now hand over items like bulbs, batteries, and old electronics to sanitation workers. A private agency has been contracted for the collection, segregation, transportation, and processing of this e-waste. Approximately 3.5 tonnes of e-waste has been collected to date, with a local recycler handling its processing every 15 days.
Despite directives for source segregation, public adherence to waste management systems remains a challenge. The Corporation has designated five collection points across its zones for segregated e-waste, but improved public participation is crucial for the campaign's success.
