Tiruchi Corporation Tackles Waste Management
11 Jul
Summary
- City aims for effective solid waste segregation at source.
- Over 470 tonnes of waste generated daily, 70% segregated.
- Awareness campaigns planned to encourage public participation.

Tiruchi Corporation is intensifying its efforts to ensure effective solid waste segregation at the source within residential and commercial establishments. The initiative aims to significantly improve the city's overall sanitation standards.
The corporation has contracted a private agency for the collection, segregation, transportation, and processing of waste generated across all 65 wards. This measure is in response to the daily generation of approximately 470 tonnes of waste, with current source segregation rates at about 70%.
Residents and businesses are now instructed to separate waste into wet, dry, sanitation, and special-care categories. Wet waste will be composted, while dry waste will be sent to a new Material Recovery Facility for recycling. Sanitation waste includes items like diapers, and special-care waste covers materials such as paint cans and medicines.
Sanitary inspectors are conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance, with warnings of potential penalties for repeated violations. The establishment of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR) centers has also contributed to improved source segregation practices, particularly in apartment complexes. However, officials note that households in economically weaker neighborhoods and some commercial areas still need improvement.
To further encourage participation, special awareness campaigns are being organized throughout the city. These campaigns will involve residents' welfare associations, students, and volunteers to educate the public on the importance of source segregation.
