Canal Transformation: Tiruchi Tackles Garbage Hotspots
18 Jun
Summary
- Tiruchi Corporation is beautifying garbage hotspots along canals.
- Protective barriers with murals installed on Uyyakondan Canal.
- Sixty-five garbage hotspots transformed into green spaces since September 2023.

The Tiruchi Corporation has launched a comprehensive initiative to combat pollution by beautifying known garbage-dumping sites along the city's waterways. Despite previous awareness campaigns, indiscriminate waste disposal into canals remains a significant issue, impacting water quality.
As a proactive measure, a protective barrier featuring painted murals has been installed along the Uyyakondan Canal on Anna Nagar Link Road. This artistic intervention aims to discourage littering and improve the aesthetic appeal of the area. Similar beautification projects are slated for Rettai Vaikal and Amma Mandapam Padithurai within the month.
Past attempts using mesh barriers and warning banners proved unsuccessful. The corporation now plans to fence the banks of major canals, especially in residential areas where dumping is rampant. Since September 2023, 65 garbage hotspots across the city have been successfully reclaimed and converted into green spaces, under constant surveillance.
