Rewilding Milestone: Tiger Cub Promoted to Bigger Habitat
22 Feb
Summary
- Tiger MT-7 shifted to a 21-hectare enclosure for rewilding.
- The tiger was rescued as a cub from Ranthambore Tiger Reserve.
- NTCA approved phased rewilding plan after site inspection.

A significant stride in tiger conservation, MT-7, a tiger previously housed in a five-hectare area, was successfully relocated to a more expansive 21-hectare enclosure at Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve on Saturday, February 21, 2026. This move is part of a phased rewilding initiative.
MT-7's journey began as a rescued cub from Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. After spending nearly 22 months at Abheda Biological Park, the cub was transferred to a five-hectare rewilding enclosure in Mukundra Hills, where it spent approximately 14 months. During this period, MT-7 showcased successful hunting and natural behavioral patterns.
Following an assessment by National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) experts who confirmed the tiger's adaptability and hunting skills, the phased rewilding plan received NTCA approval. The operation, conducted by a committee of field officers, veterinarians, and wildlife biologists, involved tranquilizing MT-7, fitting a radio collar, and monitoring her health before release into the larger enclosure.
The final decision on MT-7's release into the natural forest will be made by the Chief Wildlife Warden, contingent on her continued progress and expert recommendations. This development marks a crucial advancement in regional tiger rewilding and conservation efforts.
