A recent incident at Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh has sparked concern after a visitor was filmed throwing a piece of cloth into a tiger enclosure. The video, which circulated widely on social media on Monday, shows tigers interacting with the thrown object, prompting questions about visitor conduct and animal welfare.
Wildlife activists have condemned the act, highlighting it as a significant lapse in security and supervision within the zoo. They stressed that unlike incidents involving wild animals in their natural habitats, zoos must ensure captive animals are protected from harassment.
Rajdeepsinh Jhala, deputy conservator of forests at Sakkarbaug Zoo, stated that zoo personnel were temporarily away attending to leopard cages when the transgression occurred. The zoo is cooperating with the police to identify and apprehend the individuals involved, reviewing CCTV footage to aid the investigation.
