Thrissur's Kole wetlands recently hosted a "Mazha Nadatham" (Rain Walk), a monsoon nature exploration that brought the region's biodiversity into sharp focus. Organized by the Kole Birders Collective, the event saw approximately 18 participants, including students and seasoned birdwatchers, traverse the expansive Thrissur-Ponnani wetland landscape.
During the three-kilometer walk, attendees successfully documented more than 38 species of birds, alongside a variety of dragonflies and butterflies. A particularly captivating sight was the presence of Black-winged Stilt chicks with their parents, underscoring the significance of the current breeding season for numerous waterbird species.
The Kole Birders Collective is actively pursuing further research into the nesting ecology and conservation needs of birds that breed within these crucial wetlands. In parallel, preparations are advancing for the second edition of the Kerala Bird Atlas survey in Thrissur district, scheduled to launch on July 15. To ensure volunteer readiness, a workshop on survey methodologies and a citizen scientists' meet were conducted.
