Seaside Village Tears Down Homes Amidst Critical Erosion
30 Jan
Summary
- Six additional homes are being demolished due to critical erosion levels.
- East Suffolk Council will have demolished 10 properties since October.
- New funding will help plan for future risks and relocation.

Demolition has commenced on six more homes in the seaside village of Thorpeness, Suffolk, due to critical levels of coastal erosion. This brings the total number of properties demolished to 10 since October last year. The latest demolitions involve one detached house and five apartments within a single building, with three additional properties identified as being at immediate risk.
East Suffolk Council is providing support to affected homeowners, including assistance with demolition costs and alternative housing. The council is also considering proposals for privately funded, short-term defenses from other homeowners facing erosion along North End Avenue.
The village is set to benefit from a share of £30 million in Coastal Adaptation Pilots funding. However, as these funds cannot be used for building new sea defenses, the focus will be on future planning and supporting residents at high risk to relocate.
