Fishermen Demand Monthly Meetings for Faster Issue Resolution
3 Jul
Summary
- Fishermen requested monthly grievance meetings instead of quarterly ones.
- Key demands include a 'T' shaped jetty and dredging at Punnaikayal.
- Stalled fishlanding project at Tharuvaikulam needs immediate resumption.

Fishermen in Thoothukudi have urgently requested the district administration to transition grievance redress meetings to a monthly schedule. This shift, they argue, is crucial for addressing their concerns promptly, as the current quarterly meetings limit timely solutions. The fishermen articulated several key demands during a recent meeting, presided over by District Collector Vishu Mahajan.
Prominent among the requests is the construction of a 'T' shaped jetty at Mathavanayakkar colony to facilitate the safe berthing of fishing boats. Additionally, they seek the installation of high mast lights and surveillance cameras for improved safety and security in the area. The completion of the groyne project in Punnaikayal and immediate dredging operations there were also stressed.
Further issues raised include a plea from Punnaikayal residents for a protective wall against rainwater flooding. The stalled fishlanding project at Tharuvaikulam requires immediate resumption, alongside a request to relocate a nearby garbage dumping yard and establish a diesel bunk. Other demands involved constructing a groyne at Singithurai and providing safe drinking water to Alandhalai fishing village, with fishermen from Pazhayakayal highlighting difficulties caused by excessive sand accumulation.
