Texas Beaches See Record Kemp's Ridley Turtle Nests in 2026
15 Jun
Summary
- Texas coast recorded nearly 600 Kemp's ridley nests by mid-June.
- This surpasses the previous 2025 record of 449 nests.
- Decades-long restoration program shows encouraging recovery signs.

Texas beaches are experiencing a record-breaking year for Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting in 2026. By mid-June, authorities had documented around 600 nests, far surpassing the previous annual record of 449 nests from 2025. These findings represent a significant success for the long-standing Bi-national Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Restoration and Enhancement Program.
While Mexico hosts the majority of annual nests, Texas serves as a crucial secondary nesting ground. Nests are now being found along the Texas coast from Galveston Island to Boca Chica Beach, with the highest concentration on North Padre Island within the Padre Island National Seashore. This area actively protects nests, releasing over 3,000 hatchlings so far this season.
The national seashore's biological technicians are conducting daily patrols to monitor nest development. Public releases of hatchlings are announced via the park's social media and website, as well as a dedicated Hatchling Hotline, for those interested in witnessing this conservation success.
