Tenkasi Farmers Get Free Saplings for Greener Farms
22 Oct
Summary
- Farmers receive free tree saplings to boost forest cover.
- The initiative aims to increase farmers' income through timber sales.
- Trees can be planted as intercrops or on unused fallow lands.

The Tenkasi Forest Division has initiated a program to distribute a variety of tree saplings to farmers at no cost. This effort is part of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission and the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project for Climate Change Response. The primary goals are to enhance forest cover within the district and to provide farmers with an additional income stream through the sale of timber from these trees.
Farmers are encouraged to plant these saplings as intercrops on their existing agricultural land or utilize fallow lands that are currently unused. This dual approach aims to bring more land under productive use while simultaneously improving the local environment. The selected tree species include economically valuable timber-yielding varieties such as red sanders, Indian Rosewood, and Mahogany, alongside fruit-bearing and medicinal trees like Indian blackberry and neem.
Interested farmers can contact several forest offices within the Tenkasi division for more information on sapling availability and the necessary procedures for obtaining them. Specific contact numbers for the Tenkasi, Alangulam, Puliyangudi, and Sankarankovil social forestry offices have been provided, alongside the Tenkasi forest division office number.
