A group of Southern California high school students has set a new Guinness World Record, demonstrating a significant commitment to environmental sustainability. The teen-led initiative, Another Bounce, in partnership with Habits of Waste, successfully collected an unprecedented number of sports balls for recycling at Reed Park in Santa Monica.
The record-breaking effort amassed 2,674 lbs. and 14.4 oz. of sports balls, equating to approximately 22,000 items. This achievement addresses the substantial waste problem associated with sports equipment, as millions of tennis and pickleballs are produced annually, with their rubber taking over 400 years to decompose.
Launched initially as a school project, Another Bounce expanded its collection efforts since February, placing containers at local tennis courts across the Los Angeles area. Their campaign notably reached all 50 states, emphasizing the widespread impact of racket sport waste and the potential for collective action.
The collected balls are slated for recycling into new sporting goods, court surfaces, and other materials, diverting a significant amount of waste from landfills. This accomplishment serves as a powerful reminder of the waste generated by sports and inspires innovative solutions to conventional practices.
