River Sewage Solution: Chemical-Free Trial Succeeds
28 Aug
Summary
- Pilot sewage treatment trial on Tamirabharani river shows success.
- Treated water meets standards higher than government mandates.
- Chemical-free electrochemical system offers flexible, modular treatment.

A groundbreaking pilot sewage-treatment trial conducted on the Tamirabharani river has achieved remarkable results, demonstrating that raw municipal sewage can be treated to surpass statutory pollution-control standards. This innovative approach utilizes a compact, chemical-free electrochemical system, requiring minimal civil construction with factory-built modular units. The 5 KLD demonstration plant, employing the ECKlien Hybrid Advanced Sewage Treatment System, was installed at a sewage outlet point and operated under supervision.
During the trial, inlet raw sewage and outlet treated water samples were rigorously tested by an accredited laboratory, with continuous online monitoring. The ECKlien system integrates electro-coagulation, electro-oxidation, and electro-flotation processes. This technology generates low sludge, operates odor-free, and offers instant controls, making it a flexible solution for immediate compliance needs.
This decentralized, chemical-free model is proposed for expansion across other untreated outfalls along the Tamirabharani. It serves as a crucial interim solution, enabling civic bodies to demonstrate compliance with mandates and safeguard the river's ecosystem while long-term underground drainage projects are completed.
