Tamil Nadu Notifies 3 Elephant Corridors

The Tamil Nadu government has officially notified three vital elephant corridors within the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary. This significant conservation effort aims to enhance the long-term survival of Asian elephants and mitigate human-wildlife conflict. These corridors will facilitate the crucial trans-Cauvery migration of elephants and other large mammals between Tamil Nadu and the neighboring state of Karnataka.

The identified corridors, including Jawalagiri-Ulbanda-Thaggatti, Jawalagiri-Panai-Anchetty, and Bilikkal-Jawalagiri, are situated entirely within reserved forest areas. This ensures they do not encroach upon any revenue villages, public lands, or private properties, thereby minimizing potential human-wildlife conflict. The corridors serve as essential connectivity links, responding to elephant movements influenced by monsoonal changes and habitat needs.

Court proceedings highlighted the importance of expediting such notifications. Judges suggested that issuing the notification first could even aid in more efficient removal of any potential encroachments, allowing for simultaneous eviction processes.
