The Tamil Nadu government is launching six Climate Resilience Centres (CRCs) across five districts to enhance experiential learning in ecology, biodiversity, and conservation. This initiative, costing ₹6 crore, was announced by minister V. K. Rajeev and will establish centers in Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Virudhunagar, and two in Villupuram.
These centers are designed to implement nature-based solutions for environmental challenges such as waste management and wetland restoration. They will actively involve local communities in conservation activities and educate them on the effects of climate change. Students will benefit from direct, in-person educational experiences at these facilities.
A similar project began in 2023 with a project management unit at Killai, near Pichavaram mangroves, in collaboration with WRI-India. This pilot involved canal desilting, waterway cleaning, mangrove nursery setup, and livelihood projects like electric boats and apiculture, serving as a model for the new coastal district centers.
